Virtual counselling and online psychotherapy for pregnancy and postpartum: perinatal therapy Ontario
Therapy by video for pregnancy and life with a new baby, wherever you live in the province.
It's 2 a.m., your little one is finally asleep on your chest, and you're searching for help in the dark. The nearest specialist who understands this stage is an hour's drive away. You don't have childcare, and you can't picture sitting in a waiting room with a newborn. So you close the tab, again.
You're not alone in that, and you don't have to wait until things get easier. Our team offers therapy by video anywhere in Ontario, from early pregnancy through the postpartum months. It's the same care we offer in our office, as part of our perinatal counselling in Kitchener-Waterloo. When you're ready, you can get in touch and we'll talk it through.
How online perinatal care works
You meet your therapist by video, from your living room or wherever you feel comfortable. Each session lasts 50 minutes, and you can bring whatever is on your mind: worries before the birth, a hard postpartum start, or simply feeling overwhelmed and unlike yourself. Virtual perinatal counselling uses the same approaches as therapy in our office, with the same team. Online perinatal care is still therapy: warm, focused and built around you.
Who our virtual therapy is for

Our virtual therapy is for pregnant and postpartum parents, and partners, who want support but can't easily get to an office. You might live in a small town, a rural area or the north. You might live in a city, but caring for an infant through the transition home makes the trip feel impossible. Some parents choose video simply because talking from home feels easier. You might also feel alone with it, or feel the pressure to have it all together.
Therapy from anywhere in Ontario
We can work with you as long as you're in Ontario during your session. Our team is registered in Ontario, so that's the one rule that matters. People join us from across Ontario: from cities, from cottage country, and from towns where this kind of therapy is hard to find.
Why online therapy fits life with a baby
For many parents, online therapy is what makes it possible to start therapy. Pregnancy, physical recovery and the early weeks at home leave very little room in the day.
Therapy that works around feeds and naps
You can feed, rock or settle your little one during a session. If you need a minute, we pause. Evening and weekend times are available, so you can book around naps or a co-parent's schedule. Flexible care meets you where you are.
No travel, no childcare, no waiting room
There's no drive, no parking and no travel time, and no need to find someone to watch the baby. You can be in your pyjamas with a cup of tea. That makes therapy accessible for people who would otherwise go without support.
What a virtual session looks like

Here's what to expect:
- A link by email: you click it a few minutes before your appointment
- A private spot: a bedroom, a quiet corner or a parked car all work
- Your infant is welcome: feeding and soothing are part of the hour
- Time together: to talk, reflect and plan the week ahead
- Phone if you need it: calls are available too, and are a good backup if video drops
Privacy and the platform we use
We meet on a secure, PHIPA-compliant video platform. Everything you share about your mental health is confidential and protected under PHIPA, Ontario's health privacy law. Headphones help protect your privacy at home, especially if family is nearby. If privacy is hard to find, we'll work out a time that suits you and feels safe.
Prenatal and postpartum concerns we help with
Our team supports the whole stretch from pregnancy, postpartum recovery and into early parenthood. Here are a few of the reasons people reach out for therapy.
Low mood and worry after birth
Postpartum depression, perinatal depression, low mood and constant worry are some of the most common reasons parents come to us. Perinatal anxiety and postpartum anxiety are common too. You don't need a label, a diagnosis or a list of signs and symptoms to start. Depression after birth doesn't always look like sadness, and anxiety and depression often show up together.
Scary thoughts, anger and a hard birth
Some people struggle with intrusive thoughts, sudden anger, or memories of childbirth that felt frightening. Birth trauma can show up later than you expect. Shame and guilt often come along with it, and therapy can help with all of it.
Loss, fertility and pregnancy
Pregnancy loss, grief and complications are part of perinatal care too. So is the transition to parenthood: changes in identity, motherhood and your relationship. We support people through fertility treatment, joy that feels complicated, and fear about what comes next.
Perinatal mental health, one session at a time

Perinatal mental health covers a lot of ground. Therapy helps you make sense of your emotions, grief and feelings, cope with depression and the changes in your life, find your footing as a parent, and feel less overwhelmed. Most people notice that it isn't one big conversation that helps, but the steady work over time. Your mental health and well-being matter as much as anyone's in the family. This is part of perinatal mental wellness: small, steady steps with someone in your corner.
How therapy works by video
Online postpartum therapy uses the same approaches as in-person work, adjusted for the screen. We'll explain each one and choose together, so the plan fits you.
CBT for anxious thoughts
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) looks at the thought patterns that keep anxiety going and helps you practise steadier ones. Much of it is talking and practising between meetings, which suits video well.
ACT and mindfulness from home
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and mindfulness help you make room for hard emotions without being run by them. Practising in your own space means you build coping skills in the place you'll use them most.
Somatic work on screen
Somatic therapy pays attention to the nervous system: noticing tension, slowing your breathing, and helping your body settle, especially postpartum. It translates to video better than most people expect. DBT skills can help on the hardest days too.
Couples counselling by video
The postpartum year reshapes every couple. Emotionally focused therapy gives you and your partner space to talk through the emotional strain on your relationship and reconnect, from separate rooms or the same couch. Couples often find it easier to start this kind of work in a familiar room.
Working with an online therapist

Our perinatal therapists have specialized training in pregnancy and postpartum care. Each psychotherapist on our team is compassionate, trauma-informed and used to working by video with new parents, so the screen fades into the background quickly. Your emotional well-being comes first, and you never have to share more than you're ready to.
Getting started with a counsellor
Starting is simple. Online counselling with a counsellor on our team usually begins like this:
- A free consultation: 20 minutes to see whether we're a good fit
- An intake form: a few questions about you and what you're looking for
- Your first session: your history, your family and your goals
- A rhythm that suits you: weekly or every other week
Insurance and receipts for psychotherapy
Many extended health benefits plans cover psychotherapy with our team, and we provide receipts for insurance. Check your plan for details.
In person in Kitchener, online across Ontario

If you live nearby, you can also see us in person at our Kitchener office. Many clients come from Waterloo and the Waterloo region and move between the office and online as their needs change. Kitchener-Waterloo families and people across the rest of Ontario get the same team and the same care.
