Jessica Schroter, Registered Social Worker, standing on a country road beside an autumn field in warm golden-hour light

Hi, I am Jessica. I am part of Leanne's care team, and I work with teens 16 and older, adults, couples, and families, in-person in Kitchener and virtually across Ontario.

Many of the people I work with are in a season they did not choose. Losing someone they love, or preparing to. Caring for a parent with dementia while trying to hold the rest of life together. Rebuilding after an injury. Leaning on food, or shopping, or staying busy, to get through feelings that have nowhere else to go. Some arrive knowing exactly what they want to work on. Others are not sure where to begin. Both are okay.

It is okay if you do not know where to start.

You are not alone, and you are in the right place.

In my first semester of university, I sat in an introductory social work course and listened to the professor describe the work as walking with others and helping them bear the burdens they carry. It hit me at a gut level. I can do this. I want to do this. Maybe I am called to do this. I thought of the people who had walked with me up to that point in my life, and I have been following that calling ever since.

For nearly 20 years, it has taken me through hospital rehabilitation, brain injury and accident recovery, and private practice. Through all of it, I kept being drawn back to the kind of deep relationship that can only grow in therapy.

I know what it is like to sit in the other chair.

Therapy has helped me in my own life, and I value it deeply. The right therapist can help untangle what is too close to see clearly, or join you in a place where you feel utterly, even hopelessly, lost.

My childhood was, by all accounts, stable and loving. I was also often on the receiving end of my mother's anger, which I now understand came from her own unresolved trauma. I grew up in the tension of loving her while being deeply afraid of her reactions. As a parent, I have had to face how those early experiences shaped me, too.

I also grew up in a Christian home, with a father closely involved in church leadership. I know faith can be the cornerstone of a life. I also know organized religion can be a deeply flawed and painful place to find yourself. If faith, spirituality, or Christian dynamics are part of your story, you will not have to explain or defend them here. I am comfortable going there with you.

Loss has marked many chapters of my life. Preparing for death, talking about death, and living in its wake is work I have faced personally, and it is work I feel drawn to as a therapist. Closely tied to it is caregiving. I see caregiving as a sacred role, but not always one we get to choose. It can be fulfilling and exhausting at the same time, and it confronts us with our limits and our own humanity.

So this is how I show up for you.

Our sessions will feel relaxed and conversational, but never aimless. Together, we look at what is working, what is not, and where you would like to go. You do not need a tidy version of your story. Your vulnerability will be met with care, curiosity, and acceptance.

Compassionate. Curious. Steady.

You do not have to carry this alone.

“At its core, therapy is about understanding why we do what we do, finding the places we feel stuck, and making space for growth and change.”

Jessica Schroter

Who I work with.

I support teens 16 and older, adults, couples, and families through loss, caregiving, and the patterns that quietly keep them stuck.

Grief & Bereavement

Losing someone you love, preparing for a death you can see coming, or living in the quiet that follows. Grief has no timeline and no right way to look. Trained in grief therapy with Dr. Robert Neimeyer, I make room for all of it, including the loss others expect you to be over by now.

Caregiver Support

Caring for a parent living with dementia, a partner after an injury, or a family member whose needs keep growing. Caregiving can leave no room for your own needs, and plenty of room for guilt. Years of hospital social work, including co-facilitating a family caregiver support group, showed me how much caregivers carry quietly.

Aging & Later Life

Retirement, changing health, shifting roles with adult children, or facing your own mortality. My master's degree specialized in gerontology, and I welcome the questions that come with growing older, for you or for someone you love.

Disordered Eating & Food Addiction

When food becomes the way you cope with stress, loneliness, or feelings that have nowhere else to go. Without judgment, we get curious about what the eating is doing for you, and build other ways to meet those needs.

Couples

Two people who care about each other but keep getting stuck in the same place. I offer a space where both of you feel heard, and we look honestly at what is working, what is not, and where you want to go together.

Family Therapy

When a loss, an illness, or a new caregiving role shifts everyone in the family at once. I help families talk about what is hard, understand each other's experience, and find their way through it together.

Brain Injury, Concussion & Accident Recovery

Fourteen years in neuro rehabilitation and motor vehicle accident recovery showed me how an injury can change everything: work, relationships, identity, and how safe the world feels. I bring the brain and body into our work, along with a deep understanding of the road back.

Trauma & Post-Traumatic Stress

Experiences that left your nervous system on high alert long after the danger passed. With trauma counselling training and years of trauma-informed practice, I move at your pace and build safety first.

Anxiety, Stress & Burnout

A mind that will not switch off, and a body running on empty. We slow down, look at what is driving the pressure, and build practical tools that actually fit your life.

Depression

When life feels heavy, flat, or far away, and even small things take more than you have to give. There is room here for the weight, without any pressure to pretend it away.

Emotional Regulation & Unhealthy Coping

Feelings that come on fast and strong, or habits like compulsive shopping and spending that help in the moment and cost you later. Together, we understand why you do what you do, and build ways of coping that leave you feeling better, not worse.

Faith & Spirituality

Faith can be a source of strength, and also a source of pain, confusion, or loss. Whether you are leaning into your faith, questioning it, or healing from religious hurt, I am comfortable navigating faith and Christian dynamics with you.

How I Work

Therapy should feel safe and collaborative. Whether you come in with a clear focus or are not quite sure where to begin, we will find a starting point that feels manageable, and build from there.

01

Compassion & Curiosity

You will be heard and supported without judgment. I am genuinely curious about you and your story, not only the problem that brought you in, because that is where real understanding begins.

02

Relaxed, With Structure

Sessions feel warm, present, and conversational. When structure helps, I bring it, so our time together stays focused on where you want to go.

03

Brain & Body Informed

Years in neuro rehabilitation taught me that the brain and body are part of every story. Bringing both into therapy has become a mainstay of how I work, especially after trauma, injury, or long stretches of stress.

04

Parts Work (IFS)

Internal Family Systems helps us understand the different parts of you, including the ones that protect you in ways that no longer help. When those parts feel understood, they can soften, and change gets easier.

05

Practical, Evidence-Based Skills

When you need tools, I draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, grounded in attachment theory, so new ways of thinking and coping take root in your everyday life.

Training & credentials.

Nearly 20 years of clinical social work, from hospital rehabilitation to private practice, sit behind every session. Here is a snapshot of my training and qualifications.
