Online anxiety therapy Ontario: virtual counselling from wherever you are

The same steady care, from your couch, your car or your kitchen table, anywhere in the province.

Sometimes the hardest part of getting help for anxiety is getting there. The drive, the parking, the waiting room, the chance of running into someone you know. When anxiety is already high, all of that can feel like one more hurdle between you and the help you need.

Therapy by video lets you start from the place you already feel safest. This page is part of our anxiety therapy in Kitchener-Waterloo, and it explains how online therapy for anxiety works with our team, who it suits, and what to expect.

How online anxiety therapy works

A session by video works much like a session in our office. You and your counsellor meet face to face on screen, for the same length of session, with the same attention and care. You'll see the same person each week, and the therapy follows the same steps it would in the room.

Our video sessions run on Jane's telehealth platform. You get a link before each appointment and join online from a laptop, tablet or phone. There's nothing complicated to install, and if the technology ever feels like a barrier, we'll help you through it. Many people find virtual appointments easier to fit into a full week than they expected, and online anxiety therapy can start sooner than you think. Online therapy isn't a lesser version of therapy; it's the same work in a different room.

Is therapy online right for you?

Therapy by video can be a good fit for anxiety, especially when getting out the door is part of what feels hard. You might find it suits you if you:

  • have a busy schedule, shift work or a long commute
  • want to fit a session into a lunch break
  • have childcare at home and can't easily leave
  • live in a rural area or a small town far from an office
  • live with chronic illness or isolation that makes getting around tiring
  • simply feel more at ease talking from home

Video isn't the best fit for everyone. If home offers no quiet corner, or you'd rather keep a clear line between therapy and the rest of your life, in-person sessions might suit you better. We can talk it through together, and a virtual option can always sit alongside others.

Anxiety we help with

People come to us with many kinds of anxiety, and it often shows up in more than one way. Online anxiety support can help with:

  • racing thoughts, overthinking and rumination
  • physical symptoms like chest tightness, shallow breathing and tension
  • panic attacks that seem to come out of nowhere
  • social anxiety and the fear of being judged
  • health anxiety and worry about what a sensation means
  • perfectionism and the pressure to get everything right
  • chronic stress, burnout and life transitions
  • family expectations and relationship challenges
  • trouble with sleep, or insomnia when your mind won't settle

Anxiety and depression often go together, and we work with both. Low mood, restless nights and losing interest in things you used to enjoy are worth bringing to a session. Depression and stress often overlap with anxiety. Your mental health matters as a whole, not just as separate symptoms, and good mental health care looks at all of it. If any symptoms are new or worrying, please check in with your doctor as well.

Our approach to virtual therapy

Our therapists use the same approaches by video as in the room, and counselling by video covers the same ground. Therapy is collaborative and non-judgmental. We start with what you'd like to change, set goals together, and adjust as we go. Each of us draws on a mix of approaches, chosen to fit you rather than the other way around. Our care is trauma-informed, so you decide how fast to go with anything difficult.

CBT therapy for anxiety

Cognitive behavioural therapy helps you notice the unhelpful patterns that keep anxiety going: the thoughts that predict the worst, and the habits that keep you avoiding what scares you. In CBT, we test those thoughts gently and practise new responses. CBT therapy can include small steps of exposure, taken when you're ready, so anxiety loosens its grip gradually.

Acceptance, mindfulness and DBT skills

Acceptance and commitment therapy helps you make room for uncertainty and choose actions that fit your values, even while anxiety is present. ACT pairs well with mindfulness and grounding techniques you can practise between therapy sessions, right where you are. Dialectical behaviour therapy brings practical skills for distress tolerance, and DBT skills can help you ride out the moments when anxiety spikes.

Somatic and emotion-focused work

Anxiety lives in the body as much as the mind. We pay attention to your nervous system, your breathing and the places stress settles, and help them ease. Emotion-focused therapy helps you understand the emotions underneath the anxiety, and builds self-compassion along the way. Our team also draws on relational, attachment-based and family systems work, and narrative therapy, depending on what fits.

Your privacy in every virtual session

Jane's telehealth platform is PHIPA-compliant, which means it meets Ontario's health privacy standards. Each virtual session uses secure video, and everything you share stays confidential, the same as it would in our office.

Your part is finding a private space where you won't be overheard. Headphones help if others are home. Some people join from a parked car or a quiet room at work. If your connection drops during an online session, we'll reconnect or call you, so you're never left hanging mid-thought.

Getting ready for therapy by video

You don't need much to get started:

  • a computer or tablet with a camera
  • a steady internet connection
  • a quiet room where you feel comfortable
  • a few minutes beforehand to settle in

In your first counselling session, we'll talk about what brings you in, what anxiety looks like for you day to day, and what you'd like to be different. There's no pressure to share everything at once.

Online counselling with our therapists

Our team of therapists, offering anxiety therapy and counselling

Each counsellor on our team is registered with the CRPO, so you're working with a registered psychotherapist whether you meet online or in person. We see clients 16 years and older. You'll keep the same counsellor throughout, and that consistency matters: it gives you a safe space to build trust, week after week.

Finding the right therapist

Finding a therapist who fits matters more than any one technique. We offer a free consultation, a 20-minute call to see whether we're a good match. If it doesn't feel right, we'll help you find someone else on our team.

Evening and weekend counselling

Evening and weekend sessions are available, along with flexible scheduling around work, school runs and family. With no commute, therapy takes not much longer than the session itself, which makes it easier to keep going when life gets busy. Counselling fits around you.

Seeing us in Kitchener, Waterloo or from home

Our office is in Kitchener, and many of our clients live in Waterloo and across Waterloo region. Some prefer in-person sessions, some prefer video, and many switch between the two. You can start therapy by video and come in later, or the other way around. The person you work with stays the same either way.

A farmhouse among fields and forest, therapy wherever you live in Ontario

Therapy wherever you live in Ontario

Because our therapy services run by video, we can work with you across the province, wherever you live: in a city, a small town or a rural area hours from the nearest office. There's no travel and no waiting room, which makes therapy more accessible when distance, a full calendar or anxiety would otherwise get in the way. Secure virtual care is open to anyone in Ontario. Online sessions follow the same care as sessions in person, and virtual therapy Ontario-wide means you don't have to move or drive to find the right fit.
