Colette Young, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), standing on a path beside an autumn meadow

Hi, I am Colette. I am part of Leanne's care team, and I work with teens 16 years and older, adults, and couples in-person in Kitchener and virtually across Ontario.

The people I work with are often the ones everyone else leans on. The reliable one. The one who remembers every birthday, takes on the extra work, and says “I am fine” before anyone can finish asking. Many learned long ago that their own needs could wait. Some are quietly questioning the values they built their lives around. Others want to make sense of what they have been through, and find a way to live that finally feels like their own, once they figure out what that means.

You have spent years showing up for everyone else.

Here, someone shows up for you.

Together, we explore your ways of knowing and being in the world. I work from an attachment-based, humanistic perspective, which means I am interested in all of you, not only the problem that brought you in. I will offer gentle challenges and honest observations about the patterns that keep looping, with friends, with family, or with your partner. I value complexity over quick fixes. And I show up first as a human being, never as the expert on your life.

I know this work from the other side of the room.

For decades, I carried the weight of an acute childhood trauma. It lived in my nervous system as near-constant anxiety, a hypervigilance I could not switch off, and a racing mind that rarely stopped. I was the classic people-pleaser at work and at home, and I measured my worth by how useful and accomplished I could be.

On paper, I had built the life I was supposed to want. A steady teaching career. A lovely home. A solid marriage and two beautiful children. All that was missing was the white picket fence. Inside, I was edging toward burnout, longing for something truer than the life I was performing.

Then a major concussion brought everything to a halt. I could not work, parent, or hold a conversation. Depression settled in, my anxiety reached an all-time high, and the trauma I had buried for most of my life grew louder every day. I knew I needed help, and I knew I could not wait any longer.

I remember the mix of fear and hope I felt walking into that first session. My therapist stayed steady through the hardest parts of my story, and she never once asked me to make myself smaller. Vulnerability felt wildly uncomfortable at first. Slowly, I learned that leaning into that discomfort was exactly where the growth was.

With her, I found a sense of worth that had nothing to do with performance. Piece by piece, I rebuilt a life that finally felt like the real me.

Now I get to offer that same steadiness to you.

You do not need the right words, or a tidy version of your story. Bring the parts that feel messy, uncertain, or too much. Those are the parts we will make room for.

Curious. Steady. Human.

You do not have to earn your place here.

“Healing is not about becoming someone new. It is about returning to who you were before you learned to earn your worth.”

Colette Young

Who I work with.

I support teens 16 and older, adults, and couples who are holding it all together on the outside, while something on the inside is asking to be heard.

People-Pleasing & Self-Worth

Saying yes before you have checked in with yourself. Feeling responsible for everyone's comfort, and quietly resentful that no one seems to notice yours. Together, we untangle your worth from your usefulness, so you can be valued for who you are rather than what you do.

Burnout

Running on empty while still looking capable. The exhaustion that sleep does not fix, and the creeping sense that the life you built no longer fits. We slow down long enough to notice what you have been overriding, and what you actually need.

Anxiety

A mind that rarely switches off. Scanning for what could go wrong, replaying conversations, bracing for the next thing. We work with your nervous system rather than against it, so calm becomes something you can feel, not only something you think about.

Trauma

Experiences that ended long ago but still shape how you react, trust, and protect yourself. We move gently and at your pace, building safety first, so the past can begin to loosen its grip on the present.

Depression

When life feels heavy, flat, or far away, and even the things you love take more than you have to give. There is room here for the weight, without any pressure to pretend it away.

Relationship Patterns

The same argument on repeat. Old roles resurfacing with friends, family, or your partner. I offer gentle observations and honest challenges about the cycles that keep you stuck, so you can begin to respond differently.

Couples

Two people who care about each other but keep missing each other. Informed by Emotionally Focused training, we look beneath the conflict to the fears and longings driving it, so you can find your way back to one another.

Life Transitions & Values

The career that no longer fits. The identity you have outgrown. The quiet question of who you are once you stop living by everyone else's expectations. We make space to discover what living authentically means for you.

Teens & Education Stress

Nearly two decades in high school classrooms showed me how much young people carry: pressure to perform, peer relationships, identity, and decisions that feel enormous. For teens 16 and older, and for the educators who hold them, there is space here to breathe.

Perinatal & Postpartum

The season of becoming a parent, when your body, your identity, and your closest relationships all shift at once. Joy and overwhelm can arrive together. As a mother of two, I know how much this season can hold.

Neurodivergence

For minds that work differently in a world built for one way of thinking. We trade self-blame for understanding, and find ways of living and working that fit how you actually function.

Grief & Loss

The ache of losing someone you love, and the quieter losses too: a version of yourself, a future you expected, a life that changed without asking. Grief is not a problem to solve. It deserves company.

How I Work

Change rarely happens in a straight line, and insight alone does not always create it. What I have seen, in my own life and in the room, is that people grow when they feel safe, seen, and genuinely met. Everything I do is built on that.

01

Connection First

The relationship we build is the foundation of everything else. I take the time to create real safety and trust, because I know firsthand how fundamental that connection was to my own healing.

02

Attachment-Informed

How you learned to connect, and to protect yourself, still shapes how you show up today. We gently trace those patterns back so they stop running your relationships from underneath.

03

Humanistic

You are the expert on your own life. I bring curiosity, compassion, and clinical skill, and I trust that you already hold much of what you need. My role is to help you hear it.

04

Gently Challenging

Warmth does not mean only nodding along. When I notice a pattern keeping you stuck, I will name it with care. Honest reflection, offered kindly, is often where things begin to shift.

05

Patient & Individualized

Nearly twenty years of teaching taught me the power of patience, structure, and meeting each person where they are. There is no script here. We build the work around you, at your pace.

Training & credentials.

My commitment to ongoing learning and professional growth is central to how I show up for you. Here is a snapshot of my training and qualifications.
