Addiction Counselling Kitchener

Support across Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge for the thing you have been managing quietly, and for the people around you.

In-person in Kitchener-Waterloo Virtual across Ontario

Most people do not arrive here in crisis. They arrive after a long stretch of telling themselves it is fine, or nearly fine, or fine compared to what it could be. Maybe you have been counting drinks without meaning to. Maybe you have deleted an app three times this month. Maybe you are the one watching someone you love and wondering when it stopped being ordinary.

Wherever you are in that, there is a way to talk about it that does not start with a label. We offer individual counselling and therapy for substance use and behavioural addictions, in person in Kitchener and online across Ontario. Support is available whether you are early in recovery, thinking about change, or holding a household together while someone else decides.

Addictions we work with

Addictions rarely look the way people expect. Some involve a substance. Some involve a behaviour that everyone around you does too, just not quite like this. Each area below has its own page with more detail about the work.

Alcohol

Drinking that has stopped being a choice you make freshly each time. This is the most common reason people contact us about addiction in Kitchener. This often shows up as a gap between what you intend on a Tuesday morning and what happens by Tuesday night. Our approach looks at what the drinking is holding together before it looks at stopping.

Alcohol addiction counselling

Cannabis

Daily use that started as a way to sleep, or to take the edge off, and became the thing you plan around. Stopping is harder than people expect, and that difficulty is not a character problem. Sleep, appetite and mood usually take a few weeks to settle.

Codependency

When someone else's substance use has quietly organised your life. Adult children of alcoholics often recognise this pattern long before they have a word for it. Counselling here is about your own limits and wellbeing, not about managing anyone else.

Codependency counselling

Gambling

Sports betting, casinos, online platforms. Financial harm often arrives before anyone names it as a problem, which makes gambling one of the more isolating things to carry. Shame tends to be the first thing we work on.

Gambling addiction counselling

Gaming

Playing that has crowded out sleep, work, or the people in the house. Common in adults who found something in a game that was missing elsewhere. The goal is rarely to quit entirely.

Gaming addiction treatment

Phone and screens

Compulsive scrolling, social media, the reach for a device before you are properly awake. Hard to take seriously because everyone does it, and real anyway. Often tangled up with anxiety and with ADHD.

Phone addiction treatment

Pornography

Use that has become secretive, escalating, or disconnected from how you want to live. This usually carries more shame than anything else on this list, and shame is the reason most people wait years before asking.

Porn addiction therapy

Sex and compulsive sexual behaviour

Patterns that feel driven rather than chosen, often with real consequences for relationships and self-respect. We work with this without moralising about it.

What our addiction counsellors do

You do not need to have decided anything before you come. You might arrive genuinely unsure whether you want to stop, cut back, or simply understand what is going on. That uncertainty is not an obstacle to the work. For a while, it usually is the work.

Our addiction counsellors start with what the behaviour is doing for you. Not as a way of excusing it, but because substance use and compulsive behaviours are almost always solving something. Sleep. Social anxiety. A body that will not settle. Grief that arrived at a bad time. Until that part is understood, stopping feels like removing a support without replacing it.

In therapy, we can work on several things at once.

01

Noticing when the pull arrives, and what is happening in the minutes before it

02

Building tolerance for the feeling underneath, slowly, so it stops being unbearable

03

Repairing the parts of life that shrank while this took up room

04

Looking at what came before, because trauma and addictions travel together more often than not

Anxiety, low mood and ADHD show up alongside addictions frequently enough that we treat them as part of the same health picture rather than as separate problems. If anxiety is what the drinking has been managing, then the anxiety needs somewhere else to go before the drinking can.

Mental health support and addiction work are the same work here. Many people come to us about anxiety or low mood and only later name the drinking, the gambling or the scrolling. Others come about the behaviour and find their mental health steadies once the thing underneath it has somewhere else to go. Nobody is asked to sort themselves into a category before they arrive.

This is counselling shaped around you rather than a fixed program. Sessions are weekly to start for most people, moving to every other week once things feel steadier. There is no set length and nobody here will tell you how long this should take.

We offer individual work rather than group therapy. Some people want both, and there are good free groups across Kitchener and Waterloo that run alongside this well. A group setting gives some people something that individual care cannot, and others find a group difficult early on. Either response is normal, and we are glad to point you toward group support if that is what you want.

Accessing treatment services in Waterloo region

Counselling is one part of what is available in Waterloo region, and it is not the right first step for everyone.

If you are drinking heavily every day, stopping suddenly can be medically dangerous. Withdrawal support has to be managed by a physician or a withdrawal management service, not by a therapist. If that is where you are, please speak with your family doctor or call Here 24/7 at 1-844-437-3247 before you change anything. That is the regional access point for addiction treatment and mental health services, and they can arrange an assessment and a referral.

Accessing treatment services in this region can be genuinely confusing, so it is worth knowing what exists:

Medically supervised withdrawal management, sometimes called detox

Residential treatment programs, for people who need time away from their usual environment

A publicly funded addiction treatment program through House of Friendship, at no cost

Community counselling services through the region, also free, usually with a waitlist

Peer support groups, including Al-Anon for family members

A recovery centre or day treatment program, offering structured support without residential care

Rapid access addiction medicine clinics, for medical assessment and prescribing

Public health services in Waterloo region keep a directory of addiction and mental health supports, and Here 24/7 can walk you through it. If you are unsure what level of care you need, an assessment through them is a sensible first step. They will ask about your substance use, your physical health, your mental health and your safety, then recommend a service. Recovery looks different depending on what you are recovering from, and the right starting point differs with it.

None of this competes with what we do. If you are in a treatment program now and want individual support at the same time, that is an ordinary arrangement and often a good one. Our addiction services are designed to sit alongside medical care rather than replace it.

The other thing worth naming is who else is carrying this. Addiction is rarely contained to one person. A partner reorganises their week around it. A child learns to read a room before they can read a book. Adult children of alcoholics often describe a childhood spent being the responsible one, and they arrive decades later still doing it. Where there is a child in the house now, that is worth bringing into the room early, because the support a family needs is usually practical as well as emotional.

Some of the people we see are not using anything at all. They are the person who has held a household together and has not slept properly in two years. That is a legitimate reason to come, and it does not require anyone else to be ready for anything. Substance abuse issues affect whole families, and the family members are allowed to get help first.

Getting started in Kitchener, Waterloo, or online

We see people in person in Kitchener and online across Ontario. Online is not a lesser version of this work. For addiction counselling in particular it removes real barriers: no waiting room, no drive across Kitchener-Waterloo in traffic, no explaining where you are going on a Thursday afternoon.

People often search for addiction counselling locations close to home. Ours is a single Kitchener office rather than a chain of locations across the region, and for many clients the online option matters more than the address does.

Both formats are available for everything described on this page. Some people begin online and move to in-person later. Some do the reverse. Some keep it online permanently because it fits around work and child care.

The first session is mostly listening. You will be asked what brought you here, what you have already tried, and what you hope might be different. There is no assessment form to score and no point at which you have to declare yourself anything. If what you actually need is medical care first, or a different kind of program, we will say so plainly.

Most extended health benefit plans in Ontario include coverage for psychotherapy with a registered psychotherapist. Coverage and annual limits vary between plans, so it is worth checking your own health benefits before you start. Where a plan does not cover it, the free community resources listed above are worth knowing about.

We are based in Kitchener and work with clients across Waterloo region and the wider province. Whether you are looking for treatment, for counselling, or simply for somewhere to think out loud about it first, you are welcome to start here.

If you are in crisis right now, please use our crisis support resources or call or text 988. Those resources are available at any hour, and the regional mental health and addiction support lines answer around the clock.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is completely normal to have questions before reaching out.

No. Plenty of people start without knowing what they want, or wanting to cut back rather than stop entirely. Deciding is usually part of the work rather than a condition of starting it.

Not quite. Treatment usually describes structured programs, including residential care and medically supervised withdrawal. This is individual psychotherapy. The two work well together, and for some people a treatment program comes first.

You can still come on your own. Working on your own responses, limits and mental health tends to change a household more than waiting does, and it helps you regardless of what anyone else decides.

The underlying work is similar, because both are usually doing a job for the person. The practical parts differ, particularly where the behaviour cannot be avoided entirely, as with a phone.

Yes, and that is the common case rather than the exception. Treating them as one picture tends to work better than treating them as separate conditions.

There is no honest answer that applies to everyone. Some people notice a shift within a few months. For others the work is slower, and the early part is mostly about building enough safety to look at anything at all. Recovery is not a straight line for most people, and a return to old patterns is information rather than failure. What recovery means is also worth defining for yourself rather than inheriting, since it looks different for a person cutting back on cannabis than it does for someone leaving a residential treatment program.

Our office is in Kitchener, and we work online with clients throughout Ontario. If you are searching for addiction counselling in Kitchener or elsewhere in Waterloo region, both options are open to you.
